Despacito is a 2017 song made by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. It became the top streamed track across the globe within six months. The single a mix of reggaeton, pop and rock did not just bring attention to reggaeton but it also drew interest to Latin music in general. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs in Spanish mostly, and four songs in the year the year 2016. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it into the Top 100 In 2020, there were 41 songs. In the wake of Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in the year 2017, the most well-known artists began to join forces with reggaeton musicians. Drake and Bad Bunny collaborated for the track MIA MIA (2018) as did Madonna and Maluma. Madonna collaborated with Maluma for Medellin, 2019 In 2020, a few Reggaeton performers were expressing displeasure about the direction of the genre toward the mainstream. But a newer generation like Rauw Alejandro was determined to maintain the development. The genre often included elements of electronic dance music and other forms.
